Inside Scoop on Lisa and The Deal

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

When I was young, elementary school age, one of my friend's grandmother told us that everyone has a book in them.  I remember feeling responsible for sharing my book and kept that desire to fulfill that destiny into adulthood.

How long did it take you to write The Deal?

The storyline had been percolating in my mind for several years, but when I finally committed the dedicated time to writing fulltime, it took me one year to finish the manuscript.

What was your writing process?

I started my journey as an author by creating a private, quiet space in my home to write, free of distractions, where I could focus and allow my creativity to flow.  I always had a great work ethic, so transitioning from my international career to being a fulltime author, was something I was very excited to undertake, and took the work very seriously.  I dedicated myself to it daily.

Was the idea of writing a 300+ page novel ever daunting?

Over the years, I've spoken to audiences about making our passion projects a reality and I offer this advice, start with one page, or one step, or one critical action, because that's how you get the momentum started.  I didn't think about 300 pages when I first started writing, I thought about one page, then two and so on.  Breaking down a seemingly daunting task into bite-sized pieces makes the process manageable.  The key is to get started, to take action.

How did the story of The Deal come about?

When I moved to Dallas in the mid-1980's, I had an up close view of commercial real estate deals and an insider's knowledge of what people were willing to do to come out ahead in a high-stakes deal.  Those experiences laid the foundation for the storyline.

Were Jaclyn and Steven's characters based on real people?

No.  Jaclyn and Steven are characters I imagined based on qualities I admire.  It was fun developing their personas and giving them a voice.

Was there a part of the writing that you enjoyed best?

Two things come to mind: character and plot development.  They go hand-in-hand, but each was fun to imagine, especially as the people and plot evolved.

Will there be a sequel?

Yes!  It's in the works and I'm very excited about the storyline.  There's more suspense, intrigue and passion to come for Jaclyn and Steven.
